Below is the content of an email from Mike Thornton on the Jones Creek Workday:
On Saturday our Chapter led the way as we finished the restoration of Jones Creek. Forty people from three different Chapters and the US Forest Service participated. We finished the refilling of the rock cribs as well as fabricated three new structures to help with stream flow.
Our morning started early as we met at the Wagon Wheel for an early morning boost of coffee, eggs, bacon, and a biscuit. At 7:45 we had a seven vehicle caravan that left for Jones and arrived early to begin the set up. We were soon joined by the Forest Service crew, as well as more of or members from Big Canoe and representatives from the chapters in Blue Ridge and Middle Georgia.
Our set up and cooking crews began work as Jim Wentworth led us upstream for orientation of what we were to do for the morning. As he was talking, a small group of us were either daydreaming or chatting among themselves. Soon we noticed that Jim had finished and the majority of the workers were headed away. Jim looked our way and told us our work area was to be in the opposite direction. As we walked that way, Jim told us our group would be building three stream structures that morning. (Next time I guess we’ll pay more attention!) Soon Milton had the chain saw cranked up and had dropped and trimmed three trees, and we were toting the logs to the stream. After readying the stream bed, we placed the logs, secured them with rebar, and back filled them with rocks. The difference in the stream was immediate. In the area where there was water 6 inches deep, now there was a channel a foot deep with a little pool for the native browns to live in.
A lunch of hot dogs, beans, slaw, and chips capped the day, before we broke it all down and headed for home.
I want to thank all the Chapter members who participated. All of you worked hard, and gave up your day. As a team, we made a difference. Work days can be addictive. Once you’ve been to one, it’s easy to get hooked. If you haven’t been, please try to join us in July for the next one.
