Starting out fly fishing can be overwhelming… unless you have a great mentor from say our mentor program 😉 run by Fred Ruppel… and even then the different types of rods, lines, bugs, leaders, tippet and on and on can be like a new sales rep staring at a busy freeway not knowing how or where to get started.

Good news is we have a free eGuide that can help you with the getting started part at https://goldrushtu.org/eguide-to-fly-fishing/

Now that we’ve started, what the are all of these different fly lines and why does Neal think I understand what the heck he’s saying LOL!!!  Good news for all of us novices, there’s actually a history of fly lines that we can refer to that might simplify things a little more for us. However, even Cortland states they have about 450 different types of fly lines, so maybe some charts and and helpful links can get us on the right path.

First, here’s the actual history timeline of how fly lines came to be.

https://www.fishinginschools.org/cafcas/linehistory.htm

For a step by step to help you completely understand fly lines, click here https://www.fishinginschools.org/cafcas/homepageflylines.htm to start diving in. At the bottom of each page there are arrows to move you forward.

Now one area that I’ve always pondered is fly line color.  Not sure if there is truth to having “flashy” line or not… and I must admit my apple green line on one of my reels looks pretty cool, but after reading this it might be time for a change to my normal dull moss green line on my dry fly and small stream rigs. https://www.fishinginschools.org/cafcas/linecolors.htm

This is definitely one of those areas classified as “who knows”, but it does make some logical sense when trying to make the best presentations possible.

So there you have it… more than you ever wanted to know about fly lines, but at least now when you’re standing around the campfire talking all things fly fishing, you’ll at least be able to participate.

For the best deal on weight forward floating line that performs exceptionally well (at least it’s what I use these days and it’s been great especially for mending), you can go to https://bigtflyfishing.com/collections/lines-tippet-and-leaders/products/weight-forward-floating-fly-line one of our key sponsors.

Enjoy!
